What Affects a Leica's Value

Several things make a big difference to the price:

  • The model and production year, shown by the serial number
  • The condition of the body, shutter and rangefinder
  • The lens supplied, and the condition of its glass
  • Original box, caps, case and paperwork
  • Rare variants and special editions

Should I Have It Serviced First?

Usually not. Buyers often prefer to arrange their own service, so the cost is rarely recovered. Tell us about any faults and leave the camera as it is.

How to Get a Free Leica Valuation

Send photos through our online valuation form or by email. Please include:

  • The front, back and top plate of the camera
  • The serial number (on the top plate of screw-mount models, and on the accessory shoe of most M-series cameras)
  • The lens name, focal length and serial number
  • Whether the shutter fires and the rangefinder works

Auction or Dealer?

There are three main ways to sell a Leica, and each suits different sellers:

  • Auction: collectors and users compete, so you get the market price on the day. Best for good, rare or complete outfits. You pay a seller’s commission, agreed in writing before the sale.
  • Dealer or part-exchange: quick and certain, but a dealer has to buy below resale value to make a profit, so you usually receive less.
  • Selling privately online: you keep more of the price, but you handle photographs, questions, payment, postage and the risk of disputes yourself.

We’ll give you a realistic auction estimate first, so you can compare it with any trade offers before you decide.

Every sale is online, so your cameras reach collectors across the UK and overseas, not just people who can visit Carshalton.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is my Leica M3 worth?

It depends on the version, condition and lens. Recent M3 outfits at our sales have made £800 to £1,200, with the lens included making a big difference. Send us photos and the serial number for an estimate.

The serial number shows when it was made. On screw-mount Leicas it’s on the top plate; on most M-series cameras it’s on the accessory shoe. Send it to us with your photos and we’ll tell you what you have.

Usually not. Buyers often prefer to arrange their own service, so the cost is rarely recovered. Tell us about any faults and leave the camera as it is.
